Each of these vintage creations is constructed from dyed natural grasses. Artisans weave the fibers together strand by strand to create traditional Chinese design motifs and themes. The finished picture is textured like a work in relief. The vibrant colors are unique to the craft due to how the dried grasses hold the pigments and dyes. The delicate process of creating pictures from stalks of dried grasses demands both skill and meditative dedication. This set of original hand made pictures draws on the same traditions as classical brush painting on silk or rice paper in Asia. The theme of birds paired with flowers or fauna is more than an attractive work of art; it is also a demonstration of balance, rooted in Taoism. The energies of Yin and Yang are in harmony with the birds that fly freely in the air and the garden vegetation, which is stationary and part of the earth.
